Blood Pressure

WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE

Blood Pressure is a very important factor of the overall health of our bodies. Not many people actually think about their blood pressure and whether it is normal, low or high and our lifestyles can be a factor on whether it is normal or not. So what is Blood Pressure ?

Blood Pressure is the force that our blood puts on the walls of our arteries. The heart as it beats pumps blood through our arteries and these arteries run throughout our whole bodies. A normal blood pressure reading would be say 120/80. This is described as 120 over 80. So as the heart beats it pumps and this is when pressure is at its highest which gives the first reading 120, this is called the systolic pressure. When the heart beats it will then rest before beating again, in the rest period the pressure drops which is what the second reading is 80, this is called the diastolic pressure.

So how do we find out if we have normal blood pressure or not and what happens if my blood pressure is high or low ?  Is it dangerous and how is it treated ? These are just a few questions that I intend to cover on this site and many more of course.

The reason I have decided to write about blood pressure and see if I can help others to maintain a normal blood pressure is that about 6 months ago I went to the Doctors for a minor complaint and because I hadn’t actually been to the Doctors for about Ten or so years I was ask to make an appointment with the nurse for some tests. These were a few simple tests just to make sure I was healthy. One of these simple tests was to take my Blood Pressure, no problem with that. But the nurse was shocked and my Blood Pressure was 189/102. So as you can imagine the nurse was concerned and so was I when she told me what the result of this high Blood Pressure could mean.

So you are probably wondering what happened next well I will share this with you in the next post, see you there.
